B  We hypothesized initially that the benefit of spices might lie in their anti-microbial properties.  Those compounds in spice plants which give them their distinctive flavors probably first evolved to fight enemies such as plant-eating insects, fungi, and bacteria.  Many of the organisms which afflict spice plants attack humans too, in particular the bacteria and fungi that live on and in dead plant and animal matter.  So if spices kill these organisms, or inhibit their production of toxins, spice use in food might reduce our own chances of contracting food poisoning.

D  Studies also show that when combined, spices exhibit even greater anti-bacterial properties than when each is used alone. This is interesting because the food recipes we used in our sample specify an average of four different spices. Some spices are so frequently combined that the blends have acquired special names, such as ‘chili powder’ (typically a mixture of red pepper, onion, paprika, garlic, cumin and oregano) and ‘oriental five spice’ (pepper, cinnamon, anise, fennel and cloves).  One intriguing example is the French ‘quatre epices’ (pepper, cloves, ginger and nutmeg) which is often used in making sausages. Sausages are a rich medium for bacterial growth, and have frequently been implicated as the source of death from the botulism toxin, so the value of the anti-bacterial compounds in spices used for sausage preparation is obvious.

Answer the questions below with words taken from the passage.
Use NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS for each answer.

1.  According to the writers, what might the use of spices in cooking help
people to avoid?

2.  Which food often contains a spice known as ‘quatre epices’?

關鍵字: use of spices in cooking  /  avoid
Many of the organisms which afflict spice plants attack  humans too, in particular the bacteria and fungi that live on and in dead plant and animal matter.  So if spices kill these organisms, or inhibit their production of toxins, spice use in food might reduce our own chances of contracting food poisoning.

A  The story of tea began in ancient China over 5,000 years ago. According to the legend, Shen Nung, an early emperor was a skilled ruler, creative scientist and patron of the arts.  His far-sighted edicts required, among other things, that all drinking water be boiled as a hygienic precaution. One summer day while visiting a distant region of his realm, he and the court stopped to rest.  In accordance with his ruling, the servants began to boil water for the court to drink. Dried leaves from the nearby bush fell into the boiling water, and a brown liquid was infused into the water. As a scientist, the emperor was interested in the new liquid, drank some, and found it very refreshing.  And so, according to legend, tea was created.

B  Tea consumption spread throughout the Chinese culture reaching into every aspect of the society. In 800 A.D. Lu Yu wrote the first definitive book on tea, the Ch’a Ching.  This amazing man was orphaned as a child and raised by scholarly Buddhist monks in one of China’s finest monasteries. Patronized by the Emperor himself, his work clearly showed the Zen Buddhist philosophy to which he was exposed as a child. It was this form of tea service that Zen Buddhist missionaries would later introduce to imperial Japan. The first tea seeds were brought to Japan by the returning Buddhist priest Yeisei, who had seen the value of tea in China in enhancing

religious mediation. As a result, he is known as the “Father of Tea” in Japan. Because of this early association, tea in Japan has always been associated with Zen Buddhism. Tea received almost instant imperial sponsorship and spread rapidly from the royal court and monasteries to the other sections of Japanese society.

Question 1-2
The passage has eight paragraphs, A-H
Choose the correct heading for paragraphs A–H from the list of headings below. Write the correct number, i-x, in boxes 1-2 on your answer sheet.

List of Headings
i.
  Good or bad of tea
ii.   Tea ritual
iii.   Difficulties of import
iv.   Religious objection of tea
v.    A chance discovery
vi.   In and out of fashion
vii.   A luxury thing
viii.  A connection between tea and religion
ix.   Shortage of supply
x.    News of tea going to new continent

1.  Paragraph A  _________________

2.  Paragraph B  _________________

1. The story of tea began in ancient China over 5,000 years ago. According to the legend, Shen Nung, an early emperor was a skilled ruler, creative scientist and patron of the arts.
Dried leaves from the nearby bush fell into the boiling water, and a brown liquid was infused into the water. As a scientist, the emperor was interested in the new liquid, drank some, and found it very refreshing.  And so, according to legend, tea was created.

A chance discovery   (茶之偶然發現)

2. Tea consumption spread throughout the Chinese culture reaching into every aspect of the society. In 800 A.D. Lu Yu wrote the first definitive book on tea, the Ch’a Ching.
Because of this early association, tea in Japan has always been associated with Zen Buddhism. Tea received almost instant imperial sponsorship and spread rapidly from the royal court and monasteries to the other sections of Japanese society.

A connection between tea and religion

What / Who / Where / When / What proportion / How much / How long …..,

E Using data is a complex business. Well before a championship, sports scientists and coaches start to prepare the athlete by developing a ‘competition model', based on what they expect will be the winning times. ‘You design the model to make that time,' says Mason. ‘A start of this much, each free-swimming period has to be this fast, with a certain stroke frequency and stroke length, with turns done in these times.' All the training is then geared towards making the athlete hit those targets, both overall and for each segment of the race. Techniques like these have transformed Australia into arguably the world's most successful sporting nation.

F Of course, there's nothing to stop other countries copying-and many have tried. Some years ago, the AIS unveiled coolant-lined jackets for endurance athletes. At the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, these sliced as much as two percent off cyclists' and rowers' times. Now everyone uses them. The same has happened to the ‘altitude tent', developed by AIS to replicate the effect of altitude training at sea level. But Australia's success story is about more than easily copied technological fixes, and up to now no nation has replicated its all-encompassing system.

Answer the questions below.
Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER from the passage for each answer.

1.  What is produced to help an athlete plan their performance in an event?

2.  By how much did some cyclists' performance improve at the 1996
Olympic Games?

1. What is produced to help an athlete plan their performance in an event?
E ---- Using data is a complex
business. Well before a championship, sports scientists and coaches
start to prepare the athlete by developing a ‘competition model',
based on what they expect will be the winning times. ‘You design the   model to make that time,' says Mason.
plan their performance = prepare the athlete ;  produce = develop

2. By how much did some cyclists' performance improve at the 1996
Olympic Games?
By how much 得知該答案應為數據, 根據年代(1996 Olympic Games) 為數字乃為明顯之定位詞, 回溯原文F段 --- At the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, these sliced as much as two percent off cyclists' and rowers' times. Now everyone uses them. The same has happened to the ‘altitude tent', developed by AIS to replicate the effect of altitude training at sea level.

答案為 by two percent / by 2 % .

What / Who / Where / When / What proportion / How much / How long …..,

The sense of touch has sometimes been described as weak too, but this view is probably mistaken. Trainers of captive dolphins and small whales often remark on their animals responsiveness to being touched or rubbed, and both captive and free-ranging cetacean individuals of all species (particularly adults and calves, or members of the same subgroup) appear to make frequent contact.  This contact may help to maintain order within a group, and stroking or touching are part of the courtship ritual in most species. The area around the blowhole is also particularly sensitive and captive animals often object strongly to being touched there.

On the other hand, the position of the eyes in most dolphins and porpoises suggests that they have stereoscopic vision forward and downward. Eye positon in freshwater dolphins, which often swim on their side or upside down while feeding, suggests that what vision they have is stereoscopic forward and upward. By comparison, the bottlenose dolphin has extremely keen vision in water. Judging from the way it watches and tracks airborne flying fish, it can apparently see fairly well through the air-water interface as well. And although preliminary experimental evidence suggests that their in-air vision is poor, the accuracy with which dolphins leap high to take small fish out of a trainer’s hand provides anecdotal evidence to contrary.

Answer the questions below.
Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER from the passage for each answer.

1. Which of the senses is described here as being involved in mating?

2. What can bottlenose dolphins follow from under the water?

關鍵字: mating , 原文定位第二段 --- Trainers of captive dolphins and small whales often remark on their animals responsiveness to being touched or rubbed, and both captive and free-ranging cetacean individuals of all species (particularly adults and calves, or members of the same subgroup) appear to make frequent contact. This contact may help to maintain order within a group, and stroking or touching are part of the courtship ritual in most species.
mating = courtship   (求偶).
因此, 答案為 touch / sense of touch .

2. bottlenose dolphins
By comparison, the bottlenose dolphin has extremely keen vision in  water.Judging from the way it watches and tracks airborne flying
fish, it can apparently see fairly well through the air-water interface as
 well.
    同義詞改寫 follow = track

Part 1

The figure rose by 9% in 2012.Demand is rising significantly.

The total revenue has climbed from £23 million in 2007 to £34 million in 2010.
Prices have climbed steadily over the last year.

Profits leapt by 28% in 2009.The company saw profits leap to £23m in 2013.

House prices have surged, recording an all-time high.

Unemployment soared to a new high in 2011.

Sales rocketed by 300% in July.

Obesity is a huge problem in many Western countries and one which now attracts considerable medical interest as researchers take up the challenge to find a “cure” for the common condition of being seriously overweight.  However, rather than take responsibility for their weight, obese people have often sought solace in the excuse that they have a slow metabolism, a genetic hiccup which sentences more than half the Australian population (63% of men and 47% of women) to a life of battling with their weight.  The argument goes like this: it doesn’t matter how little they eat, they gain weight because their bodies break down food and turn it into energy more slowly than those with a so-called normal metabolic rate.
“This is nonsense, “ says Dr. Susan Jebb from the Dunn Nutrition Unit at Cambridge in England.  Despite the persistence of this metabolism myth, science has known for several years that the exact opposite is in fact true. Fat people have faster metabolisms than thin people.

It has long been known that a part of the brain called the hypothalamus is responsible for regulation hunger, among other things. But it wasn’t until 1994 that Professor Jeffery Friedman from Rockefeller University in the U.S. sent science in a new direction by studying an obese mouse.  Prof. Friedman found that unlike its thin brothers, the fat mouse did not produce a hitherto unknown hormone called leptin.  Manufactured by the fat cells, leptin acts as a messenger, sending signals to the hypothalamus to turn off the appetite.  Previously, the fat cells were thought to be responsible simply for storing fat.  Prof. Friedman gave the fat mouse leptin and it lost 30% of its body weight in two weeks.

TRUE--- if the statement agrees with the information
FALSE --- if the statement contradicts the information
NOT GIVEN --- if there is no information on this in the passage

1. People with obesity usually have more rapid metabolism than the slender
others.

2. Leptin, a hormone manufactured in the brain, serves as a signal to trigger
a person’s desire to eat.

However, rather than take responsibility for their weight, obese people have often sought solace in the excuse that they have a slow metabolism, a genetic hiccup which sentences more than half the Australian population (63% of men and 47% of women) to a life of battling with their weight.
“This is nonsense, “ says Dr. Susan Jebb from the Dunn Nutrition Unit at
Cambridge in England.  Despite the persistence of this metabolism myth, science has known for several years that the exact opposite is in fact true. Fat people have faster metabolisms than thin people.

關鍵字: leptin /  trigger a person’s desire to eat

Prof. Friedman found that unlike its thin brothers, the fat mouse did not produce a hitherto unknown hormone called leptin.  Manufactured by the fat cells, leptin acts as a messenger, sending signals to the hypothalamus to turn off the appetite.
